Audit Culture and the Politics of Accountability: The Price of Bureaucratic Peace?

Audit Culture and the Politics of Accountability: The Price of Bureaucratic Peace?
2003 Annual Meeting of the American Anthropological Association

This panel was organised by Professor Don Brenneis (Santa Cruz), Professor Cris Shore (Auckland) and Professor Susan Wright (Danish University of Education).

The organisers wrote an introductory paper to generate anthropological debate about changes affecting universities. The paper raised six issues:

  • Neoliberalism, enterprise and university accountability
  • Commensurability, standardisation and the tyranny of numbers
  • Beyond Foucault’s docile bodies
  • University staff: objects or subjects of power?
  • Education for citizenship?
  • Towards a comparative anthropology on neo-liberalism
  • This paper was circulated to panellists who responded with papers and commentaries. The introductory paper and the panellists’ responses are included in the website.

The responses caused the organisers to put together issues 3 and 4 (above), and to introduce a new issue ‘Universities…and society!’. The programme for the session was organised so that each panellist was a main speaker for one question, and often contributed to the discussion of other issues. On the day, discussion amongst the panellists was curtailed because so many of the audience wished to contribute questions and comments.
