Matthew M. Mars, Sheila Slaughter, and Gary Rhoades: The State-Subsidized Student Entrepreneur (PDF)

This paper introduces the emergent role of the state-subsidized student entrepreneur within the academic capitalist knowledge/learning regime. Using a multiple case study approach, this study reveals the ways students engaged in entrepreneurship are able to leverage institutional resources in support of personal market venture activities. The implications of student engagement in entrepreneurial activities from within the academy include the enhancement of entrepreneurial learning environments, shifts in faculty/student relationships, and espoused benefits to local and regional economic development initiatives.
