Matthew Fox: 50 Ideas for Free Elearning

Matthew Fox: 50 Ideas for Free Elearning

List of open source tools (and ideas for using them) in e-learning. The title is a bit misleading - you won't see a numbering from 1 to 50, but there could well be 50 ideas scattered through the pages (I didn't count them). Covers everything from blogs to wikis to podcasting to learning management. At the very least, read the '5-minute insights' at the beginning of the document: PDF. Via Kineo.

Michael K. Bergman: Comprehensive Guide to a Professional Blog Site: A Wordpress Example

Michael K. Bergman: Comprehensive Guide to a Professional Blog Site: A Wordpress Example

This is a longish and comprehensive guide to creating your own blog using WordPress, a blogging software package. The guide is intended for people who have decided to host their own blogs rather than use a hosted service such as Blogger. There is, to say the least, rather more involved in hosting your own (though I will point out that ISPs will offer WordPress and other software as part of a standard package). Though it weighs in at a hefty 74 pages, readers will still want to proceed slowly, as the author packs a lot into a very short space.

Essential Principles of High-Quality Online Teaching: Guidelines for Evaluating K-12 Online Teachers.

Essential Principles of High-Quality Online Teaching: Guidelines for Evaluating K-12 Online Teachers. - This paper discusses what makes a high-quality online teacher, examining: what it takes to be a high-quality teacher (knowing one's subject and how to teach it); what is unique about online teaching (online teachers rarely see their students, need strategies to ensure that each online student participates actively, and provide courses online so are able to work any time and any place); and how the quality of online teaching is assessed. Reference Guide for Instructional Design and Development

IEEE Reference Guide for Instructional Design and Development

IEEE Reference Guide for Instructional Design and Development - This is a well-organized, well-written introduction to standard ID concepts, with many useful reference links. The Guide is organized into six basic sections: Assessing Needs, Analyzing Learners, Writing Learning Objectives, Selecting an Instructional Strategy, Developing Materials, and Evaluating Instruction. The authors make clear that movement through the steps is not always linear and that not every step is applied to every development project.

Notice that the authors do not include finding/examining/constructing LOs as an essential step in Instructional Design, a regretable omission; nor do they? include references to LORs. (They do reference SCORM and the Advanced Distributed Learning initiative.) The materials were prepared by the Educational Activities Board of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers. "Instructional design is the process through which an educator determines the best teaching methods for specific learners in a specific context, attempting to obtain a specific goal. This reference guide is designed to help you apply sound principles of design to the creation of your courses." The resource is available as a pdf file and in html.

I have problems whenever a formulation such as this one is applied rigidly to the tasks of teaching and course design, but I do appreciate the clarity of this work. The Guide provides an overview from which teachers can jump off in their own directions according to their own judgements about the subject and the learners. ___JH
