Open Knowledge Initiative Delivers XOSID Specification

Open Knowledge Initiative Delivers XOSID Specification -

http://www.imsglobal.org/news.html

The specifications geeks in the crowd will want to note (and probably have already seen) this joint announcement by IMS and OKI that they have released an XML binding or representation of OKI's Open Service Interface Definitions (OSID), previously only officially available as Java APIs. Wilbert Kraan at CETIS has written an article which as usual does an excellent job detailing some of the implications of this work. - SWL

.LRN announced as SCORM Adopter partner by ADL

.LRN announced as SCORM Adopter partner by ADL -

http://dotlrn.org/news/one-entry?entry%5fid=90509

When people ask me for examples of open source CMS that really might be considered as alternatives to the current major commercial systems, I often cite .LRN as one potential example. It's been built from the ground up on a portal framework and already contains a host of tools one would recognize from conventional commercial CMS (and apparently there is now a related LOR component as well). This announcement of self-test SCORM compliance is another piece of good news for them. - SWL

MIT O.K.I. and IMS/GLC Collaborate to Evolve Open Service Interface Definitions - Today the IMS Global Learning Consortium (IMS/GLC) and MIT's Open Knowledge Initiative (O.K.I.) launched a collaborative change process for the next release of the Open Service Interface Definitions (OSIDs). This process will result in the third major release of the OSID specifications scheduled for later this year. From [Edu_RSS]

Normative Specifications of Learning Objects and Learning Processes: Towards Higher Levels of Automation in Standardized e-Learn

Normative Specifications of Learning Objects and Learning Processes: Towards Higher Levels of Automation in Standardized e-Learning - AbstractLearning object metadata records are nowadays mostly descriptive in the sense that they are intended to give information about the contents or the format of the learning object, but without entailing explicit run-time semantics for Learning Management Systems that use them. Nonetheless, normative metadata descriptions are also required in order to obtain systems that behave according to metadata records in a consistent and predictable way. [Distance-Educator.com]

IMS Content Packaging and Content Interoperability Call-for-Issues Announcement

IMS Content Packaging and Content Interoperability Call-for-Issues Announcement - IA major revision of the IMS Content Packaging specification and to create v1.2 (v1.1.4 is the current version). This will include the provision of new functionality but ensure backwards compatibility with the 1.1 versions of the specification;

- To create the IMS Packaging Service v1.0 specification that will enable the managed exchange of any content package-based data model using web services (including the usage of attachments to the SOAP messages). This will provide a service definition for the exchange of data models based upon any version of the IMS Content Package.

Therefore IMS is making this wide and general announcement to the community for issues that can be considered for inclusion in this proposed work. The proposed time-line is that IMS expects to start work on the CPv1.2 data model before the end of March 2005 with release of such a specification for public consideration (Public Draft) in October 2005.

IMS publishes service oriented architecture whitepaper

IMS publishes service oriented architecture whitepaper - The paper is a revised version of a document presented during last year's alt-i-lab conference (the old version date is still on it), and is indeed well worth revisiting. In it, Four experts from IMS, Sun, Microsoft and the Open Knowledge Ininiative (OKI) consider the fundamentals of the approach as applied to the learning, education and training sector. [CETIS]

Basic Architectural Principles for Learning Technology Systems Whitepaper

Basic Architectural Principles for Learning Technology Systems Whitepaper - At the present time the large community of educational systems and content providers and their users are having trouble understanding the complicated specifications world. To help in the understanding of this area, we can use a general architectural pattern and functional area breakout to help organize and give a context to this information. This paper provides a conceptual framework to do this. [IMS Global Learning Consortium, Inc.]

What Do Application Profiles Reveal about the Learning Object Metadata Standard?

What Do Application Profiles Reveal about the Learning Object Metadata Standard? - The conventional wisdom is that a learning object should be accompanied by a metadata record, whose minimal form would contain the information typically found in the description of a book or journal article, such as title, author, subject, and a unique identifier. But a more complete record would describe the technical and educational context required to activate the learning object and connect it with others to create a rich educational experience for an appropriate audience.
